Several years ago I became interested in Whizzer motorbikes. For those that don't know, Whizzers were engine kits that you could buy and then put on your bicycle. Just about any bicycle could be converted to a motorbike with a Whizzer engine ! Whizzer began building engine kits in the 1930's and continued until the early fifties when they finally went into other things. 1948 was the year that Whizzer began making a complete motorbike of their own. Whizzer called this motorbike the "Pacemaker" and continued making the Pacemaker and a smaller motorbike called the "Sportsman" which had 20" tires and had a kick starter instead of the usual peddling to start the motor. The "Ambassador" was similar to the Sportsman with kick start but was a full size 26" frame.
During the years proceeding Whizzer making the entire motorbikes several of the bicycle companies made frames especially for the Whizzer motor kits. Probably the most prevalent was the Schwinn WZ frame which had special notches in the frame for added belt clearance.
I am lucky enough to have three Whizzer motorbikes. I have a 1948 Pacemaker, 1949 WZ, and a 1949 Schwinn DX frame Whizzer. The '49 WZ I restored two years ago and the Pacemaker will be next for restoration. The picture below is of a Whizzer to give an idea of what they look like. Believe it or not, I don't have any photos of MY Whizzers yet ! Pics to follow....
I am always looking for Whizzer parts/projects so if you have anything collecting dust please let me know.
